The Invisible Library

I am fortunate to have a number of talented friends and family in my life -- painters, writers, actors and more. People I am proud of for all that they've achieved and am grateful to have in my life. The Invisible Library is the first published novel by a dear friend I have known for somewhere around 20 years (although just online at first, when I encountered her poetry on a Amber bulletin board way back when in grad school). We have roleplayed together; geeked out together over Amber, Saiyuuki, Bleach, Dr Who and more; and had many an interesting conversation over the years. Genevieve is blessed with a wicked way with words and I have always loved reading everything she writes. Mango Tree Cafe, Lazona, Kawasaki

My first actual meal of the new year was lunch at Mango Tree Cafe in Lazona Mall, attached to Kawasaki station. I think it's telling that I actually forgot about this meal when putting together my list of new restaurants. It wasn't bad, just not memorable. Mango Tree is a chain of Thai restaurants that can be found around Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka and Fukuoka (I had no idea there's two near me). Apparently there are bistros, cafes, restaurants, but I'm not sure of the difference between them. The one I ate at was a cafe, and was fairly casual, brightly lit and, importantly for New Year's Day, no line. The menu has decent, but relatively pedestrian Thai food. I had a soup with pork, cilantro and bean sprouts and some kind of fried cake (most likely shrimp). It was enough to keep me going before the Hokkaido feast I described previously, but nothing to write home about. Tonton Cafe, Osaka

In my last post, I mentioned that I had plans for dessert after lunch in Namba (Osaka). And after that disappointing lunch, I really needed the pick-me-up. Thankfully, Tonton Cafe didn't disappoint! I'd found it on Google maps, as it was halfway between the subway station and the Umeda Arts Theater where I'd be seeing Chess. Their Instagram was full of cute desserts, so I decided I'd stop by before the play. Once again the sign wasn't placed in such as a way as to be easy to see going one direction, but I spotted it when I retraced my steps. Tonton is up on the 3rd floor of a building with a coffee shop on the first floor, and a few other businesses (one per floor, for the most part). The elevator opens practically into the cafe, which was warm and cozy, with three tables and room for about 5 or 6 at the counter.
